Now that we have covered some extensive research on oxidative stress in a previous post, and the science behind NRF2 activation...
You may be wondering:
"Alright, so how the heck do I activate my dog's NRF2 pathways to help decrease oxidative stress levels?"
As we talked about previously, in order to mitigate the effects of oxidative stress, it is crucial to enhance the intake of antioxidants through a balanced diet rich in natural, whole foods, and reduce toxic exposure through lifestyle modifications. Incorporating a variety of sources of antioxidants, such as blueberries, broccoli, and sweet potatoes can help combat the damaging effects of free radicals. Regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight can also improve the body’s overall resilience against oxidative stress.
But what else can we do?
Here are a few of my favorite ways to support NRF2 Activation in dogs.

A powerful, but gentle way: An herbal Activator, and molecular hydrogen water!
LifeVantage - Petandim NRF2 Synergizer
Petandim is a unique Activator that is formulated specifically for pets, designed to enhance their overall health and vitality by activating the NRF2 pathway.
It is the first supplement for dogs formulated to combat oxidative stress through Nrf2 activation.

Petandim contains a blend of natural ingredients that work synergistically to support this activation process.
This formula in particular is a proprietary blend based off the patented human version called Protandim, and contains:
-Turmeric
Turmeric has been used for 4,000 years in both Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine to help a variety of conditions. Current studies show that turmeric helps fight cellular stress, reduce joint discomfort and aid digestion. Turmeric is known to contain natural phenols called curcuminoids.
-Milk Thistle
Milk thistle has been used for 2,000 years as an herbal remedy to support liver, kidney and gallbladder function. Several scientific studies suggest that substances in milk thistle (especially a flavonoid called silymarin) support healthy detoxification.
-Bacopa
Bacopa has long been hailed for its ability to enhance cognitive abilities. Bacopa has been important in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, used chiefly to enhance clear thinking and memory function. Studies suggest it provides strong cellular defense. It is also used to improve concentration, alertness and focus. The bacopa ingredient in Petandim is high in bacosides, the major constituent of which is the botanical compound called saponins.
-Green Tea
Green tea is made from unfermented leaves and reportedly contains the highest concentration of powerful antioxidants called polyphenols, particularly catechins, of which epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant. Protandim’s green tea extract contains 98% polyphenols. Green tea has been traditionally used for many health benefits, including regulating body temperature and blood sugar, promoting digestion, improving mental processes and improving cardiovascular health.
-Ashwaganda
Called the “king of Ayurvedic herbs,” is an adaptogen (a substance which enhances the resistance of an organism to various stressors) and has been traditionally used as an anxiolytic to help reduce chronic stress. Ashwagandha has also been used as a way to support memory enhancement and as a sleep aid. The primary active components in Ashwagandha are a group of chemical compounds called withanolides.
-Omega-3 fatty acids
Long-chain fatty acids (polyunsaturated fatty acids) found primarily in fish located in very cold climates; helps keep cell membranes flexible to communicate better.*
Incorporating this powerful, yet gentle, Activator into your dog’s daily regimen supports NRF2 pathways and helps reduce oxidative stress.
In addition to providing essential support for NRF2 activation, Petandim can also help with various health issues that may arise as dogs age.
A double-blind, placebo controlled study showed that within 60 days, there was a 47% increase of catalase in dogs taking Petandim. Catalase is a very important enzyme that protects cells from oxidative damage by free radicals.
Clinical studies have shown that Petandim:
Decreases oxidative stress
Increased playfulness
Improved energy
Promotes a shiner coat
With that, it has also been shown to support:
Skin health
Eye function
Joint mobility & flexibility
Petandim helps to bolster the natural antioxidant defenses within a dog's body, leading to improved cellular health and longevity. But the benefits of NRF2 activation extend beyond just physical health.
Petandim use has shown to improve cognitive function, which is particularly beneficial for older dogs who may be experiencing signs of cognitive decline.
This holistic approach to supporting the whole body highlights the importance of NRF2 activation and shows why Petandim is an extremely valuable addition to your dog's daily regimen.
By incorporating Petandim into their daily routine, you may notice improvements in your dogs' vitality, mobility, and overall quality of life. It is easy to administer as a tasty chewable tablet, making it convenient for both your dog, and you! Maddie and Jerry happily take it every day, and get so excited when their new shipment arrives monthly!
Overall, my preference for using Petandim to support NRF2 Activation in dogs stems from the company's 40 years of scientifically-backed research and formulation, the natural ingredients it contains, and the proven, comprehensive health benefits it offers. It is a proactive measure that dog owners can take to ensure their furry companions lead long, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
Maddie's Story:
It pains me a bit to share this, but I also am so unbelievably happy that I just have to..
Truth is, I've actually been sitting on this one for a few months on whether to post what was going on.
But I felt I needed to really sit with it and focus.
It can be hard to have an objective view when it comes to my MadDog, because she's my sweet old lady and my emotions can get clouded when anything goes wrong.
So- here it is!
Maddie had been dealing with some increased pain this past fall (2025) into winter (2026).
She was still getting her joint supplement, I increased her Chiropractic visits, and she got a few laser therapy sessions.
But she was still just not holding it all like she should.
• She became wobbly in her back end.
• She was standing hunched.
• Some days she would almost fall over.
• She had shorts spurts of trembling in pain like she had back spasms every few days, but not to the point that it was severe.
• Maddie also sometimes was a little stumbly when she would walk, especially after waking up.
I was afraid I was missing something....
Arthritis?
Bone spurs?
Neurological?
My mind was racing.
I slept on the couch by a few times on he harder days.
I decided to bring her to the vet, just to get a deeper look at what was maybe going on, and she was also just due for her annual check up anyway.
Her vet said something neurological COULD be going on but he thought it was more pain/spasm related with where her back is sensitive and compensating for some reduced hip function.
He didn't push for X-rays, but left it up to me, as it wouldn't hurt to do.
I did it just to be safe and to know where she needs more support with supplements and care, rather than just guessing. Practice what I preach, right?
When he came in to show me the X-rays, even I was floored!
*Yes, I know how to read radiographs!
He said Maddie had the hips of a 3 year old!!!!
No, I'm not kidding.
What a relief!
She had a really tiny spot in her mid back (where I knew she was painful) that looked a little bit aged, if you know what I mean...
But other than that, she got an absolute clean bill of health and he said her radiographs could not be better, especially for a dog her age.
So what now?
Nothing major, that's good.
But it left me questioning.
She's getting older.
Maddie will be 14 this summer!
I cried at the thought of eventually having to make that inevitable decision and providing end of life care.
I knew I couldn't stop her from getting older, and more sore.
We can't slow down the aging process.
.....or can we????.....
I decided to start researching to expand my options and provide more for her.
I wanted to try something new.
I prayed.
I did more research.
Something came to the forefront.
And then......
This happened.

And I haven't looked back!
Maddie was suddenly feeling like herself again!
• She began to stand straighter.
• She was more active.
• She began digging in the toy box and throwing her toys around the house again.
• Her back end wasn't wobbling.
• Her legs were now working cohesively.
Fast forward a few short months-
Maddie is like a new doggy!
This is the result of reducing oxidative stress in the body and cleaning things up on a cellular level.
Over the past few years I've explored this topic in my blog posts, in courses, books, and working through it with client's pets through various dietary and herbal choices.
But I never thought to incorporate it on a deeper level with Maddie, simply because she has always been SO healthy.
But as our dogs age, they do need a different level of support.
A level I hadn't even explored, yet.
I talk a lot about how to incorporate tailored supplements with our pets.
But there's a sharp difference between Supplementation & Activation.
With Supplementation:
We are usually filling gaps, and assisting the body to perform a specific process via providing specific foods, herbs, and/or nutrients.
With Activation:
We are activating the body's own innate ability to perform strategic functions that it was naturally designed to do. We are flipping the switch on cellular health and regulating gene expression so the body can regain its balance.
This powerful Activator is like nothing I've researched or worked with before.
And let me tell you:
It's powerful, but very gentle.
It's exactly what her body needed.
And I can't wait to experience more profound results and see even more benefits with my client's and friend's dogs.
Additionally, Maddie has been enjoying her walkies so much more!
She is doing SO incredibly well!
Her stiffness and hind end weakness seem to be a thing of the past since we started doing some conditioning exercises, as well as Activating her NRF2 pathways.
Overall, during this last fall into winter when Maddie had seemed like she was going downhill a bit, I kept it to myself and chose not to share-
Simply because I was scared and trying to stay focused on supporting her body, while coming to the realization that she is indeed getting older.
Chiropractic care had helped a lot, but I knew deep down she needed something that could penetrate deeper and really get down to the core of what was going on inside her aging body.
NRF2 Activation has been a game changer in this senior girl's care plan.
She is no longer struggling with urinary accidents, not staring off into space, and not having tremors multiple times per day!
Some of her old lady lumps & bumps also went away!
*Other dogs, like Baxter, have also had great improvement with their senior ailments!
Other Petandim Testimonials:
NRF2 Activation is different—
This is the body’s built in “master switch” for cellular protection and resilience.
When NRF2 pathways are supported, it helps your dog's cells:
✨ Activate natural antioxidant defenses
✨ Reduce everyday oxidative stress
✨ Age gracefully from the inside out
✨ Detoxify & Repair
✨ Communicate more efficiently
✨ Boost resilience so the body can handle more of life’s stressors
I talk a lot about allergy dogs, chronic issues, oxidative stress and how over supplementing without purpose does more harm than good, especially when cells are not functioning properly to begin with.
When we activate certain pathways in the body and regulate cell function, great things happen! We see increased energy, better skin and coat, as well joint function, plus reduced signs of aging, and so much more.
Bottom line:
Proper cellular health is the core of all bodily functions.
And without that:
It doesn't matter what supplements we give, what food we switch to, or what modalities we incorporate - because the cells are too bogged down, stressed, toxic, and just really aren't able to maintain normal function... Therefore can't utilize what we give.
Turn on what your dog's body was already designed to do → more cellular protection, better resilience, healthier body.
NRF2 Activation really is the master key to wellness!
Especially for seniors!

Ocemida - Hydrogen-Rich Water
Hydrogen-Rich Water (HRW) is an ancient molecule that can help to activate the NRF2 pathway.
In recent years, it has gained significant attention for its reported health benefits.
The only Hydrogen generating product I trust and recommend are Ocemida.
They have done extensive testing on their products and have numerous safety certifications, along with 3rd party testing.
*Beware of other brands, as they can actually create secondary chemicals that can harm your health!
**Do not drink directly out of the bottle, as mouth bacteria can erode the delicate membrane.

This unique form of water is concentrated with molecular hydrogen (H2), which is known for its powerful antioxidant properties. Its ability to activate the NRF2 pathway is a critical component in the body's cellular defense mechanisms that plays a vital role in protection from oxidative stress and even inflammation.
Research indicates that HRW can stimulate the NRF2 pathway, leading to increased production of the body's own natural antioxidants, such as glutathione and superoxide dismutase (SOD), which are needed for the body to properly facilitate the detoxification process.
Since the NRF2 pathway is a key regulator of the body’s antioxidant response, drinking HRW can enhances the body’s ability to combat free radicals, thereby holding the potential to reduce cellular damage and promote overall health.
Some other benefits can include:
Improving athletic performance and recovery from exercise-induced fatigue
Increasing cognitive function
Diversifying the microbiome
Overall, adding HRW to your pet's daily routine (and yours!) can help to slow aging, boost energy, reduce inflammatory responses, increase antioxidant capacity, decrease stress, and fight free radicals!

Monitoring and Adjusting Your Dog’s Care Plan
Every dog is unique, of course, and their response to NRF2 activation may vary.
Using a nutrigenomics approach, you can tailor nutrition based on your dog’s genetics, age, breed, and health status. Regular check-ups are important for any known or suspected health concerns.
Proper testing can help monitor oxidative stress and inflammation markers, mineral deficiencies, toxin levels, gut permeability, and antioxidant levels as well.
Actionable steps to help your dog benefit from NRF2 activation:
Choose whole, nutrient-dense foods rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds
Increase hydration to further support cellular functions
Maintain a clean environment to reduce exposure to pollutants and toxins
Encourage regular exercise to boost circulation and natural detox processes
These strategies work together to enhance your dog’s natural defenses, energy, inflammatory responses, detoxification, and overall well-being for healthy aging.
Why NRF2 Activation for Dogs is Important
Obviously, this is an entirely un-tapped and underutilized field when it comes to caring for our pets.
Considering the research and all the stressors and chaos our dogs deal with on a daily basis in their short lives, I recommend exploring a NRF2-focused approach.
Working in conjunction with your vet, and qualified Canine Nutritionist is helpful to lo learn how to best incorporate this powerful modality of care into your dog's life.
Supporting NRF2 activation offers a promising way to reduce oxidative stress, boost glutathione, and improve your dog’s energy, cognitive function, joint health organ function, and so much more!
By combining nutrigenomics insights with nutrition and appropriate detox strategies, you can help your dog live a healthier, more vibrant life.
Start by providing a high-quality diet and introducing antioxidant-rich whole foods.
Maintaining a toxin-free environment, and supporting your dog's detox pathways is highly recommended as well. These steps build a strong foundation for your dog’s cellular health and long-term vitality.
Your dog’s well-being depends on more than just treating symptoms.
This is far deeper than just switching around food brands and proteins, and so much more than just tossing random probiotics and supplements at specific health issues.
Activating NRF2 taps into the body’s innate ability to heal and protect itself, giving your companion the best chance at a joyful, energetic life!
